Esther Altshul Helfgott

Esther Altshul Helfgott is a nonfiction writer and poet with a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington. She is the author of Listening to Mozart: Poems of Alzheimer’s (Yakima, WA: Cave Moon Press, 2014; Two Sylvias Press, e-book edition 2014); Dear Alzheimer’s: A Caregiver’s Diary & Poems (Yakima, WA: Cave Moon Press, 2013; Two Sylvias Press, e-book edition 2013); The Homeless One: A Poem in Many Voices (Seattle: Kota Press, 2000).

Esther’s work appears most recently in  Dementia Arts: Celebrating Creativity in Elder Care by Gary Glazner (Health Professions Press, 2014); Into the Storm: Journeys with Alzheimer’s, Collin Tong, ed. (Book Publisher’s Network, 2014);  RASP Poetry Anthology, Michael Dylan Welch, ed.,  and is forthcoming in  Eric Pfeiffer, M.D.’s Mastering Caregiving in Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias (Yale University Press, 2015). 

Poems or essays appear in numerous publications, including Ribbons: Journal of the Tanka Society of America; Blue Lyra Review, Journal of Poetry Therapy, Maggid: A Journal of Jewish Literature; American Imago: Psychoanalysis and the Human Sciences; Raven Chronicles, Floating Bridge Review, Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer’s Disease and HistoryLink: the online Encyclopedia of Washington State History, and The Seattle Star. She’s a longtime literary activist, a 2010 Jack Straw poet, and founder of Seattle’s “It’s About Time Writer’s Reading Series,” now in its 25th year.
